Ethanol Extract of Senggani Leaves (Melastoma malabathricum L), Triglycerides, Flavonoids, Rattus norvegicus

Abstrak

Dyslipidemia was characterized by abnormal blood lipid levels, including elevated total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL, accompanied by decreased HDL, and could contribute to cardiovascular diseases. Statins were commonly used to manage dyslipidemia but could cause adverse effects. Senggani leaves (Melastoma malabathricum L.) contained flavonoids with potential antioxidant activity that could inhibit LDL oxidation. This study aimed to determine the effect of ethanolic extract of senggani leaves (Melastoma malabathricum L.) on triglyceride levels in male white rats induced by a high-fat diet. This laboratory experimental study used a pre-test and post-test control group design. The subjects were male white rats induced with a high-fat diet and divided into six groups: normal control, negative control (1% Na-CMC), positive control (simvastatin), and ethanolic extract groups receiving doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg body weight. Lipid levels were measured on days 7, 14, and 28. Data were analyzed using paired t-test and one-way ANOVA, followed by the LSD post-hoc test. One-way ANOVA showed a significant difference in HDL levels among groups (p = 0.000; p< 0.05). The LSD test showed significant differences between all extract dosage groups and the negative control (p< 0.05). Thus, the ethanolic extractpof senggani leaves affected HDL cholesterol levels in male white rats at doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg body weight.
